Birds in Sri Lanka December 2019 & China May 2017

Hallo,

Eind 2019 reisde ik voor een korte trip naar Sri Lanka, om een aantal gebieden in het neerslagrijke Zuidwesten van het land te bekijken: Met name het bos op beide oevers van de Kelani rivier bij Kitulgala, het hoog gelegen Horton Plains, Bundala Nationale Park aan de zuidkust en, als absoluut hoogtepunt, het Sinharaja Biosfeerreservaat met een betrekkelijk klein - 8900ha - maar belangrijk stuk bos. Belangrijk omdat dit het grootste en enige nog levensvatbare primair regenwoud in Sri Lanka is.
Daar had ik het geluk op pad te gaan met een locale gids - Dhanushka Sanjeewa. Scherp vogelaar, vaardig fotograaf. Onthoud die naam.
Met hem stond ik, in het ongebaande hellingbos, opeens voor een paartje Sri Lanka Frogmouth op hun roestplek. Twee merkwaardige vogels vlakbij in een boomvaren. Ze keurden mijn lens nauwelijks een blik waardig. Hogerop in de jungle was daar de Serendib Scops Owl, een zeldzaamheid die pas in 2001 ontdekt en beschreven is en waarvan een paar honderd individuen voorkomen in vijf verschillende bosrestanten binnen Sri Lanka.
In de andere gebieden fotografeerde ik o.a. de fantastische boskip Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl, de Grey-headed Fish Eagle een paar pracht parkieten, purpurkoeten, bijeneters en ook goede bekenden als de Visarend, Purpurreiger, Poelruiter, Krombek- en Kleine strandloper, Grote Gele Kwikstaart en Grote Pieper.
En er is meer! Zo voeg ik een korte serie foto's toe uit Sichuan, waar ik in mei 2017 rondtrok. Ook die foto's beveel ik je van harte aan.
